Curbside mailboxes are designed for safety to break away if hit. The very heavy wet snow that snowplows were pushing to clear streets after the blizzard was heavy enough to knock over mailboxes in some parts of the city. If you are unable to prop your mailbox back up sufficiently for the mail carrier to use it to deliver mail, the mail will be held at the post office for pick up. You can call the York post office (402-362-4514) or use the USPS website to set up your mail to be held until the mailbox can be propped up or fixed. In past storms city crews have helped to prop up knocked over mailboxes. Given the volume of snow and the other emergency operations still in process, it will take some time to get to mailboxes still down. If you are able to prop up your downed mailbox and/or help your neighbors prop up their mailboxes, you are encouraged to do so.
