Youth Programs

Spy Kids

CALLING ALL KID DETECTIVES: Your expertise is needed in our quest to solve mysteries! We will be unraveling riddles, discovering clues, investigating evidence, and interrogating witnesses all in a search to find the culprit! We need your help!!

Pumpkin Decorating

Come decorate pumpkins with YPR!  We’ll let you make a mess!  We’ll have some pumpkins, paint, feathers, glitter, carving tools, markers, google eyes and anything else that you could possibly need!

Candy Cane Hunt & Cookie Decorating

YPR will be teaming up with York Area Young Professionals again this year to provide a morning of holiday fun! YPR will hide candy canes throughout East Hill Park where we welcome you to come hunt for candy canes and try to collect as many as possible! Then directly following that, we will head over to York College’s Sack Hall to decorate cookies, provided by York Area Young Professionals. The hunt will begin at 9:00am on Saturday, December 15th, then followed directly by cookie decorating. All ages are welcome and it is a free event!

Polar Bear Plunge Pool Party

Snowblazers

Stay warm during the cold winter weather by joining York Parks and Recreation! We’ll play games, eat snacks, construct crafts and don’t forget we’ll swim in the afternoon! We’ll even have a New Year’s Party on the last day!

Water Babies

This program is for children 6 months to 4 years of age and their parents.  It will build swimming readiness by emphasizing fun and safety in the water.  Swim diapers must be used unless potty trained. 

When:  January 28 – February 1

Float for Life

This is a class designed for infants to learn how to survival float if they were to ever fall into water and no one else is around. Drowning is the #2 cause of death in infants only second to car accidents. Our trained staff wants every child to know how to self-rescue if the situation ever came to it. This class is FREE to whoever wants to participate! 

When:  Tuesdays & Thursdays in February (5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28)

Time: 5:30 – 6:00pm

Who:  Infants, Toddlers, Kids – anyone that wants to learn

York Parks and Recreation Winter Swim Lessons

The Community Center will be offering public swim lessons.  Class size is limited.  For questions and registration contact the Community Center. For lesson descriptions turn to page (*whichever page the lesson info is on)

When: Tuesdays & Thursdays in February (5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28)

Time:   Primary & Secondary 6:00-6:25pm

Beginner & Advanced 6:35-7:00pm

Professional & Adult 7:10 – 7:35pm

Who: Anyone wanting to learn how to swim.

Level Descriptions

Beginner–
Participants will learn water safety and basic swimming fundamentals.  Upon completion, participants will be able to blow bubbles, bob, front and back float with assistance and enter and exit the water. 
Primary-
Participants will continue to learn and begin to practice water safety while building on previous skills learned.  Upon completion, participants will be able to submerge whole body, front and back glide with assistance and have knowledge of the kicks and arm motions. 
Secondary-
Participants will practice water safety while continuing to improve skills learned in the Primary.  Upon completion, participants will be able to front and back crawl, jump into chest deep water and front and back glide, and continue to learn the elementary backstroke and breast stroke. 
Advanced-
Participants will be taking their skills to deeper water and practicing water safety at a higher level.  Upon completion, participants will be able to tread water for 30 seconds, jump into deeper water, front crawl with head in the water and dive.  Participants will also master elementary backstroke, back crawl, and breaststroke.  Advanced participants will be able to go off the diving board. 
Professional-
Participants will be fine tuning the skills that they have learned from the previous levels.  Participants are good swimmers and fill confident around water.  Upon completion, participants will be able dive for objects in the deep end, change direction while swimming the front/back stroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke.  They will learn the butterfly.  They will be able to tread water for an extended period of time.

*NEW* Middle School Dance & Dodgeball

This is an event you won’t want to miss! We welcome all middle school aged kids to come join us at the Auditorium for a dance followed by fun activities afterwards! We will start the night out on the dance floor, then will provide pizza, dodgeball tournament, and video games on the big screen to finish out the evening. Tickets can be purchased in the office of YMS, St. Joe’s, and Emmanuel. Bring your friends and your dancing shoes!

Rookie All-Stars

Get a jumpstart on becoming an All-Star.  This program will focus on a different sport each week, teaching the fundamentals and increasing the awareness of each sport for the kids.  The program is set up to have the first hour focused on the fundaments and the last 30 minutes on playing the game.
