The York Police Department is now hiring for Police Officer and Police/Fire Dispatcher.


Police Officer (Posted March 28, 2018)

The City of York, NE is hiring a police officer and establishing a future candidate list.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, be a US citizen, have the ability to obtain a valid Nebraska Driver’s License, and have obtained a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must pass rigorous background checks and a pre-employment drug screening, and will undergo a series of written, physical, and psychological tests.

This position is a regular, full-time position with competitive pay and benefits, including paid overtime and holidays, and excellent family health insurance. York PD currently works 12 hour shifts offering every other weekend off.  
Applicants are allowed to live anywhere in York County.

Nebraska certified applicants will be given preference with the following possibilities: higher lateral pay levels, and/or a sign on bonus.

Police/Fire Dispatcher (Posted March 14, 2018)

The City of York Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Full Time Public Safety Dispatcher. This position is a regular, full-time position with competitive pay and benefits. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid Nebraska driver’s license, and have obtained a high school diploma or equivalent.  Applicants must have the ability to pass a pre-employment drug test. Applicants must be able to pass a background investigation, and have no felony or serious misdemeanor arrests. 

Desired traits: ability to multi-task and function in a fast-paced and high stress environment; computer skills (or the ability to obtain them) in both standard office software and custom reporting software; ability to communicate at a high level in multiple mediums including written, electronic, and verbally in high stress situations; attention to detail and tracking of information; respect for authority and an appreciation for structured and accountable behavior.

Police Officer career opportunities and general information

As a police officer for the City of York, you will have the opportunity to serve the community while performing various aspects of law enforcement.  Duties involve traffic enforcement, accident investigation, criminal investigations, crime prevention and public speaking engagements.  Officers work 12 hour shifts which includes every other weekend (Fri.-Sun.) off.  Upon hire, completion of the 16 week Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center Basic Training Session as well as the York Police Department Field Training Program is required.

York has a population of nearly 8000 people and offers all of the character of a small town with the advantages of a more populated city.  An excellent workforce, quality of life, and low cost of living combine to make York one of the more attractive locations in Nebraska.

Minimum requirements

  • Applicants must be a US citizen.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent and must.
  • Be able to read, write, and understand the English language at the eleventh grade level as demonstrated by the Test of Adult Basic Education. 
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must not have a felony or Class I misdemeanor conviction. 
  • Applicants cannot have a DUI conviction within two (2) years of their application.
  • Applicants must also be able to perform the physical requirements of the position.  
  • Physical and mental fitness will be determined by examination.  
  • Successful applicants must relocate to within York County.
